Known by several different names, Kinesio Tape, Rocktape, or KT tape
was invented by Japanese chiropractor Kenzo Kase, D.C. KT tape has many significant benefits and is often used in conjunction with other treatment procedures. Used by individuals of all types from world-class Olympians to construction workers, many have realized the exceptional benefits of this excellent practice. Used to reduce pain and facilitate more effective healing, KT tape works by microscopically lifting the skin. This takes pressure off pain receptors and reduces the discomfort. Also, it fosters improved circulation of the blood and lymph to provide better results and increased benefits. It is very helpful as a support system for a chiropractic adjustment, helping to support both muscles and joints, as well as limit swelling of areas prone to inflammation.
What Is KT Tape
KT Tape is a unique product that uses a layer of latex-free elastic, making it different from traditional sports tape that tends to be more rigid. The elasticity, rather than forcing the muscles and joints into one position, allows the body to move naturally. It also acts as a guide for the body to hold your bones in the proper positions and remain in proper alignment. Also, unlike traditional tape, it is exceptionally versatile and can be used before, during, and after activity. It is very well known as a sports focused tape. However, nearly 85% of its use is for those
who are not athletes. Several colors are available and because it is so light and thin most forget they are even wearing it. It also comes in widths up to three inches and is water resistant.
How Does KT Tape Work?
KT tape functions in four distinct ways. The first is that it is used to reduce the level of pain due to strain, injury, or disease. It has an effect that is analgesic, and helps relieve pain by assisting the body's natural healing mechanisms. Secondly, KT tape is used to improve circulation. Studies have shown that the use of this tape allows the body to increase the flow of blood and lymph. This has many great benefits including the treatment of lymphedema, the recovery from surgery, and the reduction of swelling. The third use is to help the correct function of the muscles. KT tape accomplishes this by providing support for the muscles during movement. It helps to guide the body into proper movement patterns and reduces pressure. The final main way KT tape is used is to correct movement of the joints. Our joints are designed to function and move in very particular ways. It is when those joints begin to move in other ways that injuries and pain occurs. KT tape guides the joints to move properly, re-training them to function in the way they should.
How Is KT Tape Used?
The use of KT tape is not meant to be a permanent cure, but instead a great complement to other treatment methods. It is important to learn how to apply KT tape in the correct way for the maximum results. A professional chiropractor can assist you in understanding how it can be applied and used outside of the practitioner’s office. Usually, with proper training, a person can perfect its use within only a few attempts. It is important that when applying the tape, the skin should be dry and clean. Avoid using it on areas where lotions, oils, or topical treatments have been applied. When applying to a joint, affix it to the skin while the joint is bent. Otherwise, the tape will be pulled off when the joint extends. Also, do not stretch the ends of the tape. The ends should be applied to the skin directly without stretching for maximum hold. Finally, the tape should be applied firmly to make sure the adhesive is set, and all edges of the tape are secure.
The best part about KT tape is that because it does not severely restrict movement as traditional tape will, it can be worn anytime, and for extended periods. The tape is typically expected to hold for one to five days depending on the person and their skin. It is important to remember that KT tape should not take the place of other recommended treatment methods. KT tape is exceptionally useful as an added component to the treatment program prescribed by your chiropractor.
