Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is a common ailment of the plantar fascia which is the ligament connecting the heel bone to the toes. One of the most common causes of most heel pain, the condition affects many middle-aged individuals and people who tend to be on their feet often. Accelerate Chiropractic is experienced in treating the pain and swelling caused by Plantar Fasciitis.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is a common ailment that affects the comfort and lifestyle of those suffering from the condition. The Plantar Fascia is a flat band of tissue that supports the arch. When this tissue is strained, it causes pain and swelling when standing or walking and can eventually plantar-fasciitisdevelop tears in the ligament. Typically, the cause of strain is a result of excessive pronation (rolling the foot inward when walking), having flat feet or high arches, spending a great deal of time standing or walking, or by having tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles. It can also be caused by improper footwear and is especially common in active runners.

Typically, those with plantar fasciitis experience pain when first walking after a period of rest. Occasionally, the pain will increase as the day goes by but it is typically most uncomfortable when climbing stairs or prolonged standing. The pain is usually a sharp or stabbing sensation near the heel and can develop in one or both feet.. Without proper treatment, the plantar fascia can rupture causing a clicking or snapping sound and becoming significantly swollen. It is estimated that 10% of people will experience plantar fasciitis in their lifetime.

What treatment options are available for Plantar Fasciitis?

Fortunately, plantar fasciitis is a condition with a high rate of successful recovery. With proper treatment, the condition can be reversed in a relatively short period of time in most instances. In rare cases steroids, shockwave treatment, and surgery can be used however stretching and strengthening treatments are typically all that is needed. No single treatment works best for everyone, but an experienced practitioner of care is skilled at reducing recovery time for their patients.

Your provider will first examine the feet and legs and observe how one walks and stands. They are interested in your general health including past illness and injury, your lifestyle, and your specific symptoms. After ruling out other conditions such as stress fractures or arthritis, they will develop a list of instructions as part of a comprehensive program to improve and eliminate the condition.

There are a number of practices that can be implemented to speed healing. When possible, it is beneficial to rest the feet by reducing activities that cause pain when possible. It is often helpful to avoid walking or running on hard surfaces. Generally, using ice on the heel and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like aspirin or ibuprofen can reduce pain and swelling as needed. Toe and calf stretches are often recommended several times a day, especially when first rising in the morning. New shoes with good arch support and cushioned soles or shoe orthotics can also be helpful.
