Most of us probably do not spend much time thinking about our backs unless they hurt. We go about our day and face the countless things that can be stressful to the bones and muscles of our backs without paying too much attention until it is too late. The back is one of the most important areas of the body. It allows us to move, to lift, to dance, to run, and even to rest comfortably. When the back has suffered an injury, it can also be one of the most painful areas of the body. Fortunately, there are ways that we can help ourselves keep our backs in good shape, and prevent these issues from occurring. Below, we have compiled a list of the top 7 steps for a healthy back.
Step 1: Sit Up Straight!
When you were young, you may have been frustrated by adults who were always telling you to sit up straight or not to slouch. However, this is excellent advice. Posture plays a large role in the health of our backs. This is true when we sit, when we stand, when we undergo certain activities, and even when we are sleeping. Poor posture can put additional strain on the muscles, ligaments, and discs and back joints.
Step 2: Eat Healthy
Eating healthy has many exceptional benefits. It will help us to have more energy, feel better, and have a healthier back as well. Excess weight can take us by surprise, and healthy eating in one of the best ways to avoid adding pounds. Extra weight, especially in our mid-section is very hard on our backs because it changes our center of gravity. Proper nutrition also helps strengthen bones and muscles to keep our bodies in line.
Step 3: Invest In a Good Mattress
Investing in a quality mattress is important. However, it also must be the right mattress for our unique bodies. We spend a lot of time in our beds, and while we sleep, a mattress that is too soft, too firm, or poorly constructed can cause back pain. It also does not make for a quality night's rest that is so essential for overall health and well-being. Don't choose a mattress simply because it is on sale. Take the time to check out options, do some research, and select a mattress that works well for you.
Step 4: Exercise
It probably will come as no surprise that exercising is vital for back health. It helps to strengthen the muscles to keep our spines correctly aligned and helps to avoid injuries. Bear in mind, however that any physical activity including exercise should not be done without first doing some stretches to warm up. The strain on cold muscles is a sure way to cause a painful injury.
Step 5: Learn How To Lift
One of the most common causes of back injuries is due to improper lifting or carrying. The best way to lift an object is to stand as close as you can to it. Keep your back straight and bend your knees to reach the item. Then, use your leg muscles to lift the item, while continuing to keep the back straight. Also, if it is a heavy item, be sure to get help. It may be more convenient to attempt the lift yourself in the short term, but you may be sorry if a back injury puts you out of action for a month or two.
Step 6: Take In Fluids
You may be surprised to learn how important proper hydration is to the health of your back. Drinking enough water helps to maintain elasticity in our soft tissues, and also helps to keep fluidity in our joints. Dehydration can cause the moisture in the discs of the back. The discs then shrink leaving less protection between our bones. Being improperly hydrated is one of the leading causes of several painful disc injuries including bulging and ruptures. It also adds to the structural damage of our spines over time.
Step 7: Get Adjusted
While there are a number of things we should and can do to prevent back pain and injury, there are simply some things that are outside of our control. Having one leg longer than the other, nerves that are not communicating how to move the muscles to the brain properly, or someone bumping into us as we walk can cause our spines to be misaligned. Without regular chiropractic adjustments, pain and injury may be likely. It is best to ensure your back is properly aligned regularly and under the care of a professional chiropractor.
